Hurricane Uleki weakened and began moving away from Hawaii, but it created dangerous surf, and residents were warned that it could veer back toward the islands. The storm, with winds up to 150 m.p.h., had taken an unexpected turn toward Hawaii on Friday before stalling and then moving away. Winds have fallen to 80 m.p.h. and were expected to weaken further. However, southern coasts of the islands were buffeted by high surf kicked up by the storm, and 19 people had to be rescued off Waikiki and a nearby beach.
