3D Systems Awards Pact for Foreign Distribution
3D Systems in Sylmar, which is developing a machine that uses lasers to rapidly make plastic models of various products, said laser manufacturer Spectra-Physics agreed to distribute 3D’s machine in Europe, Africa and the Mideast.
Under the agreement, Spectra-Physics, a San Jose-based unit of Ciba-Geigy of Switzerland and one of the biggest laser producers in the United States, paid $3.6 million to 3D Systems for products to be purchased before the agreement expires on Jan. 1, 1990. The pact may be extended if Spectra-Physics meets certain sales goals.
3D Systems’ machine, about the size of a refrigerator, uses lasers, ultraviolet light and plastics to produce models of parts found in everything from cars to airplanes. 3D officials said the machine can make the models in a fraction of the time required with conventional materials such as modeling clay.
Separately, 3D Systems said it lost $2.8 million in the first half of 1988 on sales of $2 million. Year-earlier comparisons were not available because 3D Systems, which was formed in March, 1986, had no sales until January.
