Iranian naval units began minesweeping operations in the Persian Gulf as troops paraded in downtown Tehran marking the eighth anniversary of the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War. The official Islamic Republic News Agency said that the minesweeping operations, involving dozens of ships and aircraft and teams of frogmen, are being carried out as a good-will gesture after last month’s cease-fire. At least 10 ships, including a U.S. frigate and a Soviet tanker, struck Iranian-laid mines in the last 16 months of the war.
