Horseman Louis Rowan, 77, Has Fatal Heart Attack on Tennis Court

Louis R. Rowan of Pasadena, a prominent horseman, died Wednesday of a massive heart attack while playing tennis at the Valley Hunt Club. He was 77.

An original inductee into the California Racing Hall of Fame last October, Rowan was a past president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Assn. He was also a founding member of the Oak Tree board and served on the board at Del Mar.

Rowan’s stable of horses included Galaxy Libra, Quicken Tree, Coursing, Curious Clover, Spinney and Mrs. Rabbit.

Quicken Tree, who earned more than $700,000, won the 1970 Santa Anita Handicap and was never beaten at 2 miles.

Rowan was chairman of Louis Rowan & Co., which specialized in insuring thoroughbreds, and had other interests in real estate, property management and farming.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at the Rowan home, 1177 Hillside Road, Pasadena.
