Veteran British actor Dirk Bogarde has been honored by the British Film Academy with its first award for outstanding contribution to world cinema. Hundreds of celebrities, including Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter Princess Anne, gathered at London’s Odeon movie theater Sunday to honor the 67-year-old veteran of nearly 50 films. Bogarde, whose movies include “Death in Venice,” “The Servant,” “Victim,” “Darling” and “The Damned,” is recovering from a stroke he suffered last year. After watching an hourlong screen medley of his movies and hearing a flood of personal tributes, Bogarde told the audience: “All these compliments have hurt. I do hate growing old, but thank you all.”
