Student Traffic Safety

All too often, a situation must get extremely tragic before public outcry and/or the proper officials finally do something to remedy the problem. Many times it is barely enough, or the program is a few steps away from really doing the job.

Not so the case with traffic on Street of the Golden Lantern and other nearby busy thoroughfares, where hundreds of school-children attempt to get to and from school safely each day, in Laguna Nigel. Each morning and afternoon, Calfornia Highway Patrol and Orange County officers patrol the intersection, both to control intersection cross traffic and to slow down the usual 60- to 70-m.p.h.commuters by escorting the traffic flow through the area at a safe and reasonable pace. Although a traffic signal at the intersection would allow for convenient crossing, it would not slow the speeds as much as would the display of patroil cars and officer.

Sheriff’s Department, Highway Patrol and Capistrano Unified School District officials mustbe applauded for setting up a system that does not provide a temporary less-than- adequate program is a few steps away from really doing the job.

public officials can respond to prevent a tragic situation from occuring.

As a parent and resident of the nearby intersection, I am glad to see how well public officials can respond to prevent a tragic situation from occuring
