E. German Official Tells Pollution Threat

About 37% of East Germany’s forests are “more or less badly affected” by air pollution, Rudolf Ruethnick, the country’s chief forester and deputy agriculture minister, said Saturday.

In an attempt to combat the damage, caused mainly by sulfur dioxide and other industrial chemical emissions, authorities plan to plant “smoke-resistant tree species,” Ruethnick said in an interview with the Communist Party daily Neues Deutschland.
