College Roundup : UC Irvine Tops Fresno St., 9-8, in Water Polo
UC Irvine defeated Fresno State, 9-8, in a Big West Conference water polo match Saturday in Fresno.
Tom Warde, a junior, scored 6 goals for Irvine, which broke a 5-game losing streak.
Irvine, which plays at the University of the Pacific today at 11, improved its record to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Fresno is 7-11 and 0-2.
In nonconference water polo:
Chapman 18, Cal State San Bernardino 15--Graham Frandson, Tommy Moran and Mike Reid each scored five goals to lead the host Panthers (4-10) at Villa Park High School.
In men’s cross-country:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational: UC Irvine, behind a 15th-place finish by Pete Vicencio, placed 8th. Vicencio, a senior, covered the 5-mile course in 25 minutes 15 seconds. Sophomore Aaron Mascorro was 27th in 25:26 and senior Rick Wilhelm was 30th in 25:29. Jaquera VanRenbur of Nebraska won the race in 24:25.
Redlands Invitational: Chapman’s Brian Hoyler placed eighth in 35:56 over a 5-mile course in a nonscoring meet at Redlands. Scott Cleland of Redlands won the race in 30:19.
In women’s cross-country:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Invitational: Brigid Stirling led UC Irvine to a 10th-place finish at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Stirling covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:10 for 12th place.
Redlands Invitational: Kyla Town finished third and Chris Benham was fourth, leading Chapman in a nonscoring meet. Town covered the 3.5-mile race in 22:39.6. Benham ran 22:42.5.
In California Collegiate Atheltic Assn. men’s soccer:
Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, Chapman 0--Shawn Simmons and Mark Lincir scored second-half goals to lead host Dominguez Hills (9-4, 3-1). David Wilson had 5 saves for Dominguez Hills. Keri Bello had 6 saves for Chapman (6-9, 0-5).
In Big West Conference volleyball:
Cal State Long Beach 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--The 49ers swept, 15-8, 15-7, 15-5, at Fullerton. The Titans fell to 8-14 and 0-8.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Northern Illinois 0--Kris Roberts had 7 kills and Kim Collins had 6 aces to lead host Irvine (11-7) to a 15-4, 15-3, 15-6 victory. Northern Illinois is 9-7.
