Sakharov Elected by Soviet Science Academy
MOSCOW — Andrei D. Sakharov, the Soviet nuclear physicist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975 for his uncompromising campaign for human rights, was elected Thursday to the governing council of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
Sakharov, who was stripped of all his state awards and sent into internal exile for nearly seven years because of his refusal to halt his human rights activities, was one of 20 top scientists elected to the academy’s presidium.
Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev permitted Sakharov, now 67, to return to Moscow from the industrial city of Gorky in late 1986.
