A jury in Catskill, N.Y., convicted heavyweight champion Mike Tyson’s trainer, Kevin Rooney, of third-degree assault for beating up a man found in the home of Rooney’s estranged wife.

The maximum penalty for third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, is one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Rooney, who has been Tyson’s trainer for his entire professional career, was charged after James Karkheck of Roundtop told police Rooney hit him several times with his fists, said Richard Koweek, Rooney’s attorney.

The incident took place at the Catskill home of Rooney’s estranged wife, Bonnie Rooney, last Dec. 12, Koweek said. The couple is legally separated, the lawyer said.
