Garcia’s Goals Give Sockers a Victory
Poli Garcia scored twice in the fourth quarter, and Alan Willey had a goal and 2 assists to lead the Sockers to a 5-4 Major Indoor Soccer League exhibition victory over the Kansas City Comets in front of 4,741 spectators Friday night at Kemper Arena.
The Sockers (2-2) trailed, 3-2, when Garcia scored his first goal after receiving a pass from Willey. Kevin Crow scored on another pass from Willey to put the Sockers ahead, 4-3, and then Garcia scored an insurance goal on an assist from Brian Quinn.
Zoltan Toth went all the way in goal for the Sockers and made 7 saves.
Midfielder Pedro Magallanes, a 32-year-old midfielder from Argentina who was trying to make the Sockers, suffered a severe elbow sprain when he hit the turf in the first quarter. He will be out indefinitely.
Kansas City is 1-2.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Michelle Richard had 15 kills to lead visiting Cal State Bakersfield, a Division II school, past UC San Diego, 6-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-10, 15-8.
UCSD, the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division III, has lost three in a row. Ellen Chi had 21 kills for UCSD (24-8). Cal State Bakersfield is 13-7.
No. 10 San Diego State had one of its worst hitting percentages of the season, .146, as the Aztecs dropped a Big West Conference match to the University of Pacific, 12-15, 16-14, 15-9, 15-12.
SDSU led in every game, including 8-0 in the third. Jackie Mendez had 18 kills for SDSU (20-4, 8-2). No. 14 Pacific is 11-9 and 6-3.
