Aztecs Play to Scoreless Tie With Gamecocks

San Diego State’s men’s soccer team outshot South Carolina, 8-3, but the teams played to a 0-0 tie in the UCLA Met Life tournament Saturday afternoon at Westwood. The No. 6-ranked Aztecs (12-2-2) got a shutout from Bryan Finnerty, who had to make only 1 save. Charles Arndt made 3 saves for No. 20 South Carolina (10-3-2).

San Diego State winds up round-robin play today at noon against Navy. UCLA beat Navy Saturday, 2-0.

Craig Hyde scored 2 goals, and USIU outshot Loyola Marymount, 33-2, en route to a 5-0 nonconference victory at USIU. The Gulls (5-7) allowed Loyola 2 shots in the first half and none in the second. Damian Glancy, Robbie Peeleman and Darren McCartney also scored for USIU. Loyola is 2-10-3.

Wally Whittier and Mike Bradley scored first-half goals, and UC San Diego went on to a 3-0 victory over host LaVerne. UCSD, ranked No. 5 in Division III, improved to 14-0-2 and will meet No. 11 Claremont-Mudd Monday at UCSD in a game that could decide which school plays host to the Division III West Regionals.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Kim Hicks had 19 kills as 15th-ranked San Jose State knocked off No. 10 San Diego State, 4-15, 15-4, 9-15,15-8, 15-10, in a Big West Conference match at Peterson Gym. Jackie Mendez led San Diego State (20-5, 8-3) with 13 kills. San Jose State is 19-4 and 7-2.

Claudia Johnson had 16 kills to lead U.S. International to a 15-8, 16-14, 15-12 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at the La Jolla Jewish Community Center. USIU improved to 13-8.
