Azusa : Action on Dump Delayed
The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board has delayed action until Nov. 28 on the Azusa Land Reclamation Co.’s renewed bid for a permit to expand its dump in Azusa.
A public hearing, originally scheduled for this week, was postponed to allow representatives of the dump and of water agencies opposed to the expansion to meet with the water board staff to define the issues in dispute, said Raymond K. Delacourt, senior water resource control engineer.
The new application is a revision of an expansion plan that was rejected by the regional board in March after San Gabriel Valley water officials said they feared that contaminants could leak out of the dump into ground water. Dump owners filed an appeal with the state water board and then filed a new plan with the regional board. The state board has not yet acted on the appeal. Delacourt said the regional board agreed to consider the revised application because it contains additional measures to protect ground water.
