Bellflower : 9 Agencies Get Kaiser Funds

The Kaiser Permanente Medical Foundation this week announced that it is giving $50,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations for contributing health, educational and social welfare services to the Southeast communities.

During a presentation at the health maintenance organization’s Bellflower facility, Kaiser officials announced this year’s nine recipients of the Community Service Funds awards.

The Helpline Youth Counseling Inc., which operates five offices in Bellflower, Long Beach, Norwalk and Hawaiian Gardens, received the largest share, a $25,000 grant to start a project to reduce youth violence. The counseling center plans to use the money to form a “cooperative effort” between private and public agencies to stem juvenile violence and delinquency, Kaiser spokeswoman Lydia Becerra said.

The Kaiser foundation also gave money to:

The Bellflower Unified School District, which received $2,800 to buy medical supplies and to expand its after-school program.

The city of Long Beach, which received $2,712 to produce Spanish-language prenatal-care videos.

The United Way, which received $3,420 to fund its Underserved Geographic Areas Project.

The ABC Unified School District, which received $3,261 to conduct cholesterol screenings of children.

The Harbor Developmental Disabilities Foundation, which received about $3,000 worth of free printing services from the medical center’s printing facility.

The Social Rehabilitation Center, which received $500 for its disabled program.

The American Cancer Society, which received $500 for its Camp SummerSault, a day camp for children with cancer.

Project INFO, which received $5,000 to support the agency’s Proyecto ASSUL’s conference for Latinas on alcohol abuse.
