Worker Killed at Illinois Prison
JOLIET, Ill. — A prison-supply supervisor was beaten to death early today, apparently by a pipe-wielding inmate, prompting a lock down at Stateville Correctional Center, a Department of Corrections spokesman said.
“The entire institution is under lock down,” said Nic Howell of the agency. “It will stay on indefinitely . . . until we get to the bottom of this.” The victim was identified as Suon Troeung, 53, a prison employee since 1978. He had been struck on the head and was pronounced dead on arrival at Silver Cross Hospital. Troeung was a former captain in the Cambodian army who fled war-torn Southeast Asia in 1975, officials said.
