Bob Forsch and Dave LaPoint, pitchers traded to pennant contenders for stretch runs that failed, were among 12 players who filed for free agency, raising the total to 26. Other pitchers filing were Bud Black of Cleveland, Frank DiPino of the Chicago Cubs, Rick Mahler of Atlanta and Larry McWilliams of St. Louis.
Catchers Bruce Benedict of Atlanta and Jamie Quirk of Kansas City also filed, as did infielder Manny Trillo of the Cubs and outfielders Randy Bush of Minnesota, Gary Redus of Pittsburgh and Joel Youngblood of San Francisco.
