UCSD Women Finish First in Tournament
The UC San Diego women’s volleyball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 15-4, 15-8, 15-3, and Menlo College, 16-14, 15-8, 15-5, Saturday to win the UC San Diego Volleyball Tournament. The Tritons went undefeated (4-0) during the 2-day tournament to finish ahead of Grand Canyon College (second, 2-2), La Verne (third, 2-2), Menlo (fourth, 1-3) and CS San Bernardino (fifth, 1-3).
UCSD’s Diane Klintworth was the tournament’s MVP. Tritons Laurie Bertanyi and Dee Dee Bigelow were selected to the all-tournament team.
Point Loma Nazarene’s women’s team defeated visiting Azusa Pacific, 15-13, 13-15, 15-13, 15-11, in a Golden State Conference match. Connie Navarro, a senior playing her last home match, led Point Loma (12-19, 2-12) with 22 kills. Azusa Pacific fell to 6-25 and 0-14 in conference.
Angie Rais led the USD’s women’s team with 14 kills to a 15-8, 15-11, 15-9 victory over visiting Hofstra University in a non-conference match. USD is 8-12. Hofstra, from Long Island, N.Y., is 28-4.
San Diego State’s women’s team (20-7, 8-5) lost to host Hawaii, 15-5, 15-5, 13-15, 15-7, in a Big West conference match late Friday. Hawaii had a .281 hitting percentage; the Aztecs hit .091. Hawaii is 20-2 and 11-0 in league.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Merrell Hora and Roger Webb of UC San Diego’s men’s team broke a course record at a tri-meet in San Bernardino. UCSD finished first with a score of 23, ahead of Cal Lutheran (33) and Cal State San Bernardino (70).
Hora won the 5.2-mile race in 27:01, bettering the former record of 28:14. Webb finished third in 27:37.
UCSD’s Denise McFayden also broke a course record, winning the 5,000-meter women’s race in 18:29, well ahead of the former mark of 19:50. The UCSD women, who got a third-place finish from Iris Gonzales (20:01), finished first ahead of runner-up Cal State San Bernardino.
The University of San Diego men’s team took third place at the West Coast Athletic Conference championships in Belmont, finishing behind the University of Portland and runner-up Gonzaga.
The first 5 finishers were all from Portland, Greg Muller winning the 10,000-meter race in 32:57. USD’s top finishers were Dan McNamee, who placed 14th in 34:54, and Max Lawson, who was 15th in 35:03.
USD’s women finished fourth behind Portland, Pepperdine and Gonzaga. Kari Baerg of Pepperdine won the 2.98-mile race in 18:31. USD’s Sue Chen was second in 18:50. Karen Crowe, who finished 16th in 20:25, and Melinda Smith, who finished 19th in 20:38, were USD’s other top finishers.
WOMEN’S GOLF
San Diego State is 11th at 623 and USIU 17th at 641 after two rounds of the Stanford Invitational. Southern Cal is leading with a 599 title. SDSU’s Joann McGuire is at 6-over-par 152, 8 shots behind leaders Marnie McGuire of Oklahoma State and Denise Philbrick of San Jose State. USIU’s Allison Shapcott and Yuri Maeda are tied at 154. The tournament concludes today.
SOCCER
Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s team defeated Christ College Irvine, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma. With the victory, PLNC, under first-year coach Mike Farrand, finished its best season ever with a 9-9-1 record. Andy Strandberg scored at 10:22 of the first half for PLNC (3-4 in the conference).
