United Farm Workers President Cesar Chavez was in fair condition with a broken wrist and other injuries suffered in a fall at his home, his son said. “He’s real banged up,” Paul Chavez said at the Kern County Medical Center. “He was kept overnight in the neurological unit for observation.” Chavez, 62, was working around his home at the union headquarters compound in Keene when a railing on the porch gave way. Chavez fell 8 feet, suffering a broken wrist and bruises on the head, chest and back. He has been recuperating from a 36-day water-only fast he ended Aug. 21 to protest the use of pesticides in California agriculture.
