Local News in Brief : Anaheim : State College Blvd. Will Close to Foil ‘Cruisers’

Police will close a mile-long section of State College Boulevard between La Palma and Vermont avenues Friday night in response to complaints about “cruise night” rowdiness along the boulevard.

Authorities say they have received numerous complaints from residents and businesses in the area about traffic congestion, noisy crowds, littering and alcohol consumption related to teen-age cruising on the boulevard.

Cruising along State College on the first Friday of the month has been a teen rite for years, with many youths drawn to the popular 1950s-style Angelo’s Hamburgers Restaurant at 511 S. State College.

But police say the snaking lines of cars have gotten out of hand recently, with youths from as far away as San Diego and Santa Barbara counties backing up traffic from the Riverside Freeway on the north to Ball Road on the south.

“If they’re in a festive mood they pull over and congregate in parking lots of businesses that are closed. . . ,” said Anaheim Police Lt. Steve Brace. “The noise created by the traffic and partying is a real problem for the residents.”

Police said traffic on the street will be restricted to emergency vehicles beginning about 8 p.m. In addition, residents and those wanting to go to businesses in the restricted area will be permitted to enter State College.

Anaheim Police Chief Joseph Molloy said traffic restrictions on State College “will continue into the future until order is restored to the area.”
