The volume of classified job advertising in 51 of the nation’s most widely read newspapers dropped sharply in September, the Conference Board reported. The help-wanted advertising index, released monthly by the organization of business executives, plunged seven points to 153 points in September. The seasonally adjusted index was set at 100 points for 1967. The decline in the September index was the steepest drop in more than a year. The advertising index is now six points below last September’s revised level of 159.
