PREP FOOTBALL : Freeway League : Big 2nd Period Is Conclusive for Sunny Hills
Sunny Hills High School scored 17 second-quarter points en route to a 24-3 Freeway League victory over Buena Park Friday night at Buena Park.
After exchanging field goals early in the second quarter, Sunny Hills running back Kenny Overby scored on a 15-yard run to give the Lancers the lead with 4:06 left in the half. Overby’s run capped a 74-yard drive in 8 plays.
Sunny Hills extended its lead to 17-3 a few moments later when running back Brian Pizula scored on a 1-yard run. Pizula’s score was set up when Lancer defensive lineman Mike Oster recovered a fumble by Buena Park running back Brett Ransom at the Coyote 7-yard line.
Sunny Hills quarterback Jon Beuerlein and wide receiver Stuart Jones connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter for the Lancers’ only second-half score.
Beuerlein threw only 6 times in the game but completed 5 for 67 yards, including the touchdown. Overby was Sunny Hills’ main threat on the ground with 114 yards in 13 carries.
Sunny Hills (7-2, 3-1) can clinch no worse than a tie for second place in the league with a victory in its game next week against Troy. Buena Park (2-6-1, 0-4) will have to upset first-place La Habra if it hopes to break its 26-game Freeway League losing streak.
