NHL Roundup : Flames Tie Canucks, Stay Unbeaten at Home

Doug Gilmour’s power-play goal with 8:09 left in the third period lifted the Calgary Flames to a 3-3 tie with the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night and extended the Flames’ home unbeaten streak to 13 games.

The Flames are the only team in the National Hockey League that is still unbeaten at home.

The Canucks extended their unbeaten streak to 6 games (4-0-2).

Gilmour pick up his own rebound off fallen defenseman Harold Snepsts in front of the Canucks’ net and flipped the puck over goaltender Steve Weeks.

He scored less than a minute after Tony Tanti had put Vancouver ahead. Tanti fought off a check by Al MacInnis and beat goalie Rick Wamsley from the edge of the crease.

Vancouver had goals from Robert Nordmark and Kevan Guy 14 seconds apart in the first period to give the Canucks a 2-0 lead. Calgary’s Joe Nieuwendyk scored 2 second-period goals to tie the score, 2-2.

The Flames, whose 7-game winning streak ended, have 36 points, most in the league.

Philadelphia 5, Boston 1--Mike Bullard wanted to prove that the slumping Flyers made a smart move in acquiring him from the St. Louis Blues.

Just hours after Bullard arrived after being traded for Peter Zezel, he scored 1 goal and Rich Tocchet had 2 as the Flyers snapped a 4-game losing streak with the victory at Philadelphia.

Tocchet’s goals were his first against the Bruins in his 5 seasons in the NHL. In his last 11 games, Tocchet has 12 goals and 7 assists.

Minnesota 5, Chicago 2--Brian MacLellan had 1 goal and 2 assists and Marc Habscheid scored 2 goals as the North Stars beat the Blackhawks in a game at Bloomington, Minn., between the Norris Division’s worst teams.

The victory was the third straight for the North Stars, a feat they had not accomplished in a year. It also lifted Minnesota past Chicago into sole possession of fourth place--the first time this season that the North Stars didn’t have at least a share of last place.

Detroit 5, New York Islanders 3--Steve Yzerman and Adam Graves scored 10 seconds apart midway through the second period as the Red Wings extended the Islanders’ losing streak to five with the victory at Detroit.

After Mike Stevens’ first NHL goal pulled New York (7-15) to within 2-1 early in the second period, Yzerman took a pass from Gerard Gallant near the Islander blue line, fought off defenseman Gary Nylund and scored his second goal of the night and 25th of the season.

Washington 4, St. Louis 3--John Druce registered his first NHL point when he scored with 1:25 remaining to lift the Capitals to victory at Landover, Md.

Druce, playing in his 10th game as a Capital, took a centering pass from Geoff Courtnall and scored past Blue goalie Greg Millen, giving Washington (11-10-2) its seventh victory in eight games.

New York Rangers 4, Winnipeg 3--John Ogrodnick scored his first goal of the season at 16:47 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and give the Rangers a victory at Winnipeg.

Tony Granato, who assisted on the winning goal, scored once. Guy Lafleur scored twice, once on the power play, but he also missed on a penalty shot in the second period.

The Jets (9-8-4), in last place in the tough Smythe Division, rallied when Doug Smail and Dave Ellett scored short-handed goals 1:17 apart late in the second period.
