Army Heavy Favorite to Defeat Navy Again
PHILADELPHIA — Army, with an 8-2 record and a date to play Alabama in the Sun Bowl, and Navy, with a 3-7 record and not going anywhere, will meet for the 89th time today at Veterans Stadium.
Navy holds a 41-40-7 lead in the series that started in 1890. But Army, a 10-point favorite, has won the last 2 games. The Cadets are coached by Jim Young, who is in his sixth year and is 3-2 against Navy. The Midshipmen are coached by Elliot Uzelac, who is in his second year.
Army’s wishbone attack is led by sophomore halfback Mike Mayweather, who needs just 20 yards to become only the seventh Cadet to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Sophomore quarterback Bryan McWilliams has attempted only 28 passes, completing 11 for 225 yards and 1 touchdown, but has rushed for 715 yards.
Navy is led by senior quarterback Alton Grizzard, who has rushed for 571 yards and passed for 378 yards and 2 touchdowns.
