Community College Men’s Roundup : Cerritos Rallies to Top Cypress, 66-64
Doug Newby stole a pass and made an off-balance, 15-foot shot as time ran out to give Cerritos College a 66-64 victory over Cypress Wednesday in the first round of the Golden West men’s basketball tournament.
Cypress led, 63-54, with 3:41 left but scored only 1 point the rest of the way. Newby scored 10 points for Cerritos (9-0). Vince Hizon scored 21 and Andre Lamoureux 12 for Cypress (2-5), which led at halftime, 34-32.
Glendale plays Antelope Valley at 6 p.m. and host Golden West plays Oxnard at 8 tonight.
In another Golden West tournament first-round game:
Riverside 61, Citrus 57--Bobby Joyce, a freshman forward from Santa Ana High School, scored 20 points for Riverside.
In nonconference games:
Rancho Santiago 74, Pomona Pitzer JV 60--Tony Smalley, a sophomore reserve forward scored a team-high 16 points to lead host Rancho Santiago (7-3). Mike Hunter scored 13 points and Gene Altamirano 12 for Rancho Santiago.
