Del Mar
Water from San Elijo and Los Penasquitos lagoons south of Del Mar was free to flow into the ocean Monday after sand bars that separated the lagoons from the ocean were removed, the County Department of Health Services announced.
County and state parks decided to open the lagoons to flush out stagnant water, increase nesting sights for birds and promote tidal fishing, health department spokesman Morse Mizrahi said.
As a precaution, warning signs will be posted along nearby beaches until it is determined that the water is safe for swimming, Mizrahi said.
