Bulgaria Issues a Call to Fight Its Mighty Mice
SOFIA, Bulgaria — Authorities have offered a reward of 10 days’ vacation to anyone willing to personally battle hordes of marauding field mice.
A report in the Communist Party daily Rabotnichesko Delo said that huge areas of crops are endangered by the mice, whose breeding activity accelerated during recent cold weather.
“If we don’t take strong and rapid action, large areas of winter wheat will be irrevocably destroyed,” the report said. “This scourge could destroy our crops for next year.”
A report on Bulgarian radio said the mice had to be killed by hand because poison might damage crops.
The party newspaper urged workers, youth groups, hunters and fishermen to join farm workers in the battle against the mice.
“Every participant in this campaign will be granted 10 days holiday,” it said. “We must not lose a single hour.”
