UC Irvine Faces Virginia (6-1) at Charlottesville
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A UC Irvine loss tonight to Virginia’s basketball team would mean the worst start in school history and the 2-6 Anteaters don’t figure to break their 6-game nonconference road losing streak, which dates back to last season here against the 6-1 Cavaliers.
Irvine Coach Bill Mulligan has had just one losing season in 33 years of coaching--the Anteaters were 13-17 in 1984-85--but with a home game against UCLA and 3 more road games coming up, Irvine will be hard-pressed to stave off a losing record this season.
Virginia, which has yet to play a game on the road, beat Jacksonville (Fla.), 86-81, Monday night. The Cavaliers are a physical team that is out-rebounding opponents by 5 a game. They are also deep. Cavalier reserves contributed 39 points and 25 rebounds against Jacksonville.
Ricky Butler, Irvine’s sophomore center who has 34 rebounds in 74 minutes of action, will get his first start tonight.
