Officials from the United States and Laos will meet next week to discuss the possibility of expanding cooperation in obtaining an accounting for the estimated 550 Americans listed as missing in Laos after the Vietnam War. State Department spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley said the officials will meet in the Laotian capital of Vientiane on Jan. 2. The delegation will be led by Richard T. Childress, director of Asian affairs at the National Security Council. The remains of more than 20 Americans have been returned from Laos in recent years, and discussions are under way on possible joint excavations at Laotian sites.
