Katella Tournament : Millikan Is Too Quick for Servite

Mike Gulley scored 21 points and Jeep Jensen added 14 to lead Long Beach Millikan High School to an 86-62 victory over Servite in the final of the Katella boys’ basketball tournament Friday.

Gulley, who also had 3 steals, and Jensen, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, were among four Rams who scored in double figures. Demetrius Mayhand, who also grabbed 11 rebounds, scored 13 points and Ibn Maddred had 11 points.

Servite (8-5) fell behind, 25-15, early in the second quarter after Millikan (13-2) use its quickness to score 10 consecutive points. The Rams led, 37-24, at the half.

Servite closed to 37-31 in the third quarter behind 5 points from Chris Johnson and a field goal from Steve marusich. But Millikan called a timeout, then jumped back to a 49-37 lead.

“I told the team during the timeout that we needed to keep the offensive pressure on them,” said Bill Odell, Millikan coach. “We got a little tentative out there to start the period. We weren’t taking advantage of our quickness and we were walking out there instead.”

Millikan got 7 points from Maddred in the fourth quarter as the Rams outscored the Friars, 29-20, in the period to seal the win.

Servite’s Johnson finished the game with 16 points and Marusich added 15.

“I don’t know if they are the quickest team we have seen this season, but they have a lot of 6-3 and 6-4 kids who can jump and shoot,” said Larry Walker, Servite coach.

“This is the first time we’ve been in a tournament championship game this season, and we’re really happy about advancing as far as we did because nobody expected us to do so.”

In the third-place game:

Western 65, Katella 46--Western outscored Katella, 18-10, in the second quarter to take a 34-22 halftime lead that it never relinquished. Joe Romero scored 19 points and Sam Sabbara added 13 points and 8 assists for Western (8-3). Jamie Vitzelio scored 11 points and Bryon Rice added 10 for Katella (3-11).

In the consolation finals, Bell defeated Palos Verdes, 50-45.
