Jerry Berndt, whose Rice football team was winless this season, will return to Philadelphia as the head coach of Temple University.
Temple athletic director Charles Theokas said Berndt will develop a program that stalled under Bruce Arians, who was dismissed in November after his second consecutive 4-7 season at Temple.
Rice president George Rupp said efforts were under way to find a replacement for Berndt, who had a 6-27 record in 3 seasons at Rice.
Berndt reportedly received a 5-year contract that is comparable to the $175,000 annual salary he gets at Rice.
