THE PREPS : Basketball Roundup : Ocean View Holds Off Long Beach Poly, 73-61
Todd Norman scored 26 points and Mike Frohn 21 as Ocean View High School defeated Long Beach Poly, 73-61, Wednesday in a nonleague boys’ basketball game at Ocean View.
Ocean View (10-3) went on top early and led, 18-4, late in the first quarter. Long Beach Poly rallied and closed to within 30-26 at halftime.
Long Beach Poly got within 1 late in the third quarter and trailed by only 4 entering the final quarter. However, the Seahawks made 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Norman had 12 rebounds and Frohn 6.
In other nonleague games:
Edison 55, Long Beach Wilson 41--Bill Martineau scored 16 points and Bryan Murphy 13 to lead host Edison (7-9). The Chargers trailed, 27-22, at halftime but outscored Long Beach Wilson, 33-14, in the second half. Martineau scored 12 points and Murphy 9 in the second half.
Estancia 89, Costa Mesa 44--Estancia made 65 percent of its shots from the field at Costa Mesa. The Eagles (12-1) led, 31-8, at the end of the first quarter and, 44-14, at halftime. Mike Curtis scored 22 points and Tim Kjar 17 for Estancia. Tim Nguyen scored 21 points for Costa Mesa.
Long Beach Jordan 65, Marina 62--David Mitchell scored 20 points to lead Long Beach Jordan at Marina. Cherokee Parks scored 27 points for Marina.
Mission Viejo 63, Woodbridge 53--Eric Cramer scored 26 points--16 in the second half--to lead Mission Viejo. Greg Amaya added 12 points. Woodbridge received a team-high 19 points from Tim Corken, who hit 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range.
Newport Harbor 69, Orange 41--Chris Lee scored 27 points to lead the Sailors (10-4) at Orange. Newport Harbor led, 18-8, at the end of the first quarter and, 30-16, at halftime. John Emigh scored 10 points for the Panthers (2-9).
Santa Ana Valley 61, University 46--Court Bickmore scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack for Santa Ana Valley at University. Chuck Steen scored 12 points and Bryan Singleton and Tawfic Surour each had 11 for the Falcons (8-4).
Trabuco Hills 83, Esperanza 61--Eleven players scored for visiting Trabuco Hills (6-5). Trabuco Hills’ Randy Kreich made 4 3-point shots and scored 22 points to lead all scorers. Teammates Chad Poulos (15 points) and Tim Manning (14 points) also scored in double figures. Trabuco Hills led at halftime, 29-27, but outscored Esperanza, 30-16, in the third quarter.
Western 84, Mayfair 58--Joe Romero scored 31 points to lead host Western (10-2). Brian Baber scored 24 for the Pioneers.
Brea Olinda 83, Sonora 53--Four players scored in double figures to lead Brea Olinda (11-5) over Sonora in a nonleague game at Brea. Keith Walker scored 26 points, Aaron Charlton added 15 on 5 3-point shots. Matt Recktenwald was the leading scorer for Sonora (5-8) with 17 points.
Canyon 62, Anaheim 45--The front line play of Kevin Wilborn (18 points), John Hutchinson (17), Bryan Van Noy (12) and Jerard Bryant (11) proved too much for Anaheim (6-6). Canyon’s big front line wore down Anaheim inside. Danny Castro scored 12 and Jude Barbito added 11 for Anaheim.
El Dorado 77, Valencia 48--Matt Luke scored 18 points, Travis Dowdell 12 and point guard Mike Bradach had 7 assists to go along with his 11 points to lead El Dorado (10-4) in a nonleague game at home. El Dorado scored 28 points in the first quarter and led, 46-23, halftime lead.
El Modena 65, Magnolia 54--Center John Darrow scored 19 points, Robbie Pietsch scored 17 and Ramsey Rycraw and Jeff Leedom added 10 each to lead visiting El Modena (11-2). Jerry Jones had 13 and Khampoo Singbandith added 12 for Magnolia (5-6).
Laguna Hills 73, San Clemente 59--Guard Chris Sheff scored 11 of his 18 points in the third quarter to lead Laguna Hills. The Hawks, who led by 9 at halftime, outscored San Clemente, 24-7, in the third quarter. Laguna Hills point guard Beau Hossler scored 17 and center Pat Nelson added 16 points, 6 rebounds and 7 blocked shots in a nonleague game at Laguna Hills (8-6). Eddie Morgan of San Clemente (3-9) led all scorers with 20 points.
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball
Santiago 37, Pacifica 25--Sophomore forward Becky Elcock scored 17 points and senior guard Robin Caries added 10 points and 11 assist to lead Santiago (4-5, 1-0).
Kennedy 60, Bolsa Grande 44--Michelle Harris scored 29 points to lead host Kennedy (2-5, 1-0). Valerie Ruiz scored 16 points for the Fighting Irish. Liz Flores scored 18 points for Bolsa Grande.
La Quinta 67, Rancho Alamitos 48--Amy Jalewalia had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead La Quinta (8-3, 1-0) at home. Forward Tanya Krill added 20 points for Aztecs.
Los Amigos 42, Garden Grove 30--Amy Pearson scored 16 points to lead host Los Amigos (3-6).
In Olympic League girls’ basketball:
Santa Margarita 39, Orange Lutheran 32--Kathy Mulligan scored 18 to lead visiting Santa Margarita (3-3, 1-0) in the league opener. Devon Koster scored 9 to lead Orange Lutheran (4-3, 0-1).
In girls’ nonleague basketball:
Bellflower 53, Los Alamitos 51 (OT)--Michelle Rodriguez scored 18 points to lead host Bellflower (3-9). Melinda Armstrong scored 16 points for Los Alamitos (8-5).
