Waits’ Evolution

Waits began his career as a brilliant, sensitive songwriter and he has matured with age. Yet Hilburn can only lament that the artist in his late 30s is not the same man as the artist in his early 20s.

If Hilburn had his way, Tom Waits would be writing the same (relatively) sentimental, (relatively) simple pieces he was creating in the early ‘70s.
