Having anorexia nervosa, I appreciated the segment of “Geraldo” dealing with eating disorders. The program was informative and discussed the problems of the disorders in a sensitive way. However, I feel that the show’s advertisements should have been more carefully monitored. First, there was Cher in a health club commercial, reinforcing society’s attitude that everyone should be thin like her. A few minutes later, a commercial for the Jenny Craig weight loss program was aired. Showing these commercials during the program was insensitive and capable of creating destructive feelings in people who need the help and support that the program was offering. I hope that in the future, such things will be given more serious consideration.
