World : Condemn Ceausescu, Ex-King Urges
From Times wire services
GENEVA — Ex-King Michael of Romania today called on the U.N. Human Rights Commission to condemn President Nicolae Ceausescu for planning to raze thousands of Romanian villages in a mass resettlement program.
The former monarch, a businessman in Geneva since he was forced to abdicate in 1947, made the demand in a message to the 43-nation U.N. Human Rights Commission, whose 45th session began Monday and ends March 10.
Ceausescu announced early last year that Romania would demolish about half of its 15,000 villages by the year 2000.
