SDSU Women Beat UNLV by One Point
The San Diego State women’s basketball team defeated University of Nevada-Las Vegas, 65-64, in a Big West Conference game Thursday night at Peterson Gym.
The Aztecs (21-3, 12-3) were led by Crystal Lee, who scored 15 points. Chana Perry, still hampered by a strained Achilles’ tendon, added 14 for SDSU.
SDSU trailed, 64-62, with 12 seconds remaining when UNLV’s Vicki Lander fouled Lee, who made both free throws. Perry was subsequently fouled by Paulina Jordan and made the front end of a one-and-one. UNLV (19-4, 9-4) missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.
CYCLING
Defending national collegiate cycling champion UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State, UC San Diego and the University of San Diego are expected to be among the clubs that will participate in the SDSU/Pepsi Cycling Classic to kick off the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference season Saturday and Sunday.
Riders in four men’s and two women’s categories will compete Saturday over a road course and Sunday over a criterium-style course. The event begins at 8 a.m. each day and there is no admission charge.
Saturday, in the hills near Jamul in east San Diego County, riders will compete over a 16-mile loop course on Skyline Drive and Lyons Valley Road that includes 3,000 feet of climbing every lap. Sunday, racers will compete on a .7-mile course over Hardy Avenue, Campanile Drive, Lindo Paseo Road and 55th Street around San Diego State’s fraternity row.
Among the top riders will be national criterium champion Mark Weiman of UCSD and Stig Nybo, Chase Watts and Brent Witters of San Diego State.
MEN’S TENNIS
University of San Diego lost to 16th-ranked Brigham Young, 7-2. USD is 5-3.
Curtis Dadian of USD defeated top-seeded Larry Pearl of Rice, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of No. 1-2 singles at the San Diego Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament and subsequently advanced to the quarterfinals.
USD’s Jose Louis Noriega and David Stewart advanced to the third round with a doubles victory.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
UC San Diego (1-2) did not lose a set in defeating Point Loma Nazarene College, 9-0, in La Jolla. The Tritons’ Christie Behrenf (No. 1 singles), Nancy Calhoun (No. 2), Kristen Diels (No. 4) and Susan Carney (No. 5) won in both singles and doubles in the nonconference meeting. PLNC is 2-2.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The San Diego State men’s volleyball team lost to host Cal State Long Beach, 15-13, 15-10, 10-15, 15-11, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match.
Mike Schlegel, Mike Mattarocci and Doug Potter had 16 kills apiece for the 10th-ranked Aztecs (4-5, 2-3). Mark Kerins led sixth-ranked Long Beach (8-3, 3-2) with 26 kills.
SOFTBALL
The U.S. International softball team defeated Northwestern, 5-3, in the first round of the Arizona Tournament at the University of Arizona.
Nora Flores had two runs batted in, and Cindy Oliver (2-0) picked up the victory. Northwestern (0-2) committed four errors. USIU is 3-0-1.
