Florida Beats Aztecs Again; USD Loses
San Diego State lost its second consecutive nonconference baseball game to top-ranked Florida, losing 10-1 Saturday night at SDSU’s Smith Field.
Florida (13-1) scored once in the first inning, then broke open the game in the fourth with five runs that included Mario Linares’ one-out home run Ned Brigham’s three-run home run with two out.
Jeff Barry went two for four and scored the lone run for the Aztecs (8-5) in the fifth inning. Anthony Johnson was two for five with one run batted in.
Six pitchers couldn’t stop Cal State Long Beach as host University of San Diego dropped an 11-5 nonconference decision.
Pat Fitzsimmons (3-1) was the starter and loser for USD (5-7). Cal State Long Beach (14-0) led after five innings, 4-2, and then scored five runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to break the game open. Todd Lloyd’s grand slam highlighted Cal State Long Beach’s five-run sixth. Parris Sorianello had two hits and three runs batted in for USD.
SOFTBALL
Jeanne Weinsheim went two for four as the University of San Diego defeated host Loyola, 7-1, in the first game of a doubleheader. Loyola won the second game, 2-0.
Lisa Ziomkowski (2-0) was the winning pitcher in the first game as USD scored six runs in the first inning and committed no errors.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Chana Perry scored a game-high 29 points in San Diego State’s 90-69 loss to Old Dominion in the second round of the Northern Lights tournament in Anchorage, Alaska. Kim McQuarter (26) and Kelly Lyons (12) led Old Dominion, who held a 37-36 halftime lead. For the Aztecs, Crystal Lee had 12 points.
Camille Armijo scored 24 points, Ann Duffy had 11 and Lisa Mowday 10 as Point Loma Nazarene College defeated host Southern California College, 77-53, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
Shawndel Reddic had a season-high 12 rebounds for Point Loma Nazarene (20-10, 8-4). Lisa Halliday led Southern California College (5-24, 1-11) with 15 points.
Rochelle Lightner had 15 points and six rebounds and Paula Mascari 11 points to lead the University of San Diego to a 51-46 upset of Gonzaga in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at the USD Sports Center.
USD, which led, 26-22, at the half, improved to 10-16, 6-7. Gonzaga is 15-12, 11-3.
MEN’S TRACK
San Diego State finished third with 50 points in the Western Athletic Conference indoor championships at the Air Force Academy.
Floyd Barco was first in the 400-meter run in 47.93 and anchored SDSU’s first-place mile relay team (3:17.23). SDSU’s Alfred Jackson won the triple jump with a distance of 50 feet 8 1/4 inches.
The University of Texas-El Paso won the meet with 149.5 points, and Brigham Young was second with 127.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The UC San Diego men’s team defeated Santa Clara, 15-9, 16-14, 15-7, in a nonconference match at UCSD. UCSD improved to 3-9.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Grand Canyon defeated Christian Heritage, 117-72, in a nonconference game at Granite Hills. Craig Johnson and Danl led Grand Canyon (23-4) with 24 and 19 points. For the Warhawks (23-7), Dave Kirksey scored 16 points.
