Local News in Brief : Pit Bull Mauls Girl, Is Killed by Deputy
A pit bull dog that mauled a 2 1/2-year-old girl and then attacked her grandmother was shot and killed Monday by a sheriff’s deputy one day after another pit bull was shot and killed after charging into a woman’s home, officials said.
In the latest incident, Angel Gonzales was mauled by her family’s dog, sheriff’s deputies said. Deputy David Lopez was standing near his patrol car in the 5400 block of Duxford Avenue in Azusa when he heard a child screaming, officers said.
Lopez went to a nearby home and found the toddler bleeding. When the child’s grandmother, Oralia Villareal, 44, tried to tether the dog, she also was attacked. The officer fired six times, killing the pit bull.
The child was hospitalized in fair condition with severe bites on both her legs.
Late Sunday afternoon, a Los Angeles police sergeant shot and killed a pit bull that mauled another dog inside a West Hills home.
A woman, who was not identified, called police and reported that the dog had entered through an open door and was mauling her German shepherd, police said.
The pit bull charged officers when they arrived at the home on Deerlick Drive and Sgt. Bob Rebhan killed it with a shotgun blast, officers said.
The German shepherd was in critical condition at an animal hospital. Neighbors told police they had seen the pit bull roaming wild in nearby hills.
