The Rev. Fredrik Schiotz; Headed Lutheran World Federation
The Rev. Fredrik Schiotz, 88, who once served as head of the 2.5-million member American Lutheran Church and president of the 70-million member Lutheran World Federation. A graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., Schiotz was American Lutheran Church president for 16 years before he retired in 1971. The Minneapolis-based American Lutheran Church has since merged with other Lutheran bodies to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which is based in Chicago. Schiotz, a leader in the ecumenical movement from his college days, served as president of the Lutheran World Federation from 1967 to 1971. He was also active in the World Council of Churches.
