NATION : Smokeless Cigarette Snuffed Out

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Cigarette giant R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. said today it is discontinuing test marketing of its smokeless cigarette Premier, ending a planned $1-billion product launch that sparked controversy among health groups.
The Premier “smokeless” cigarette was introduced in October, 1988, in Arizona and eastern Missouri in test marketing. “While smokers are very interested in the concept, the current product has not achieved adequate consumer acceptance,” the company said.
