Local News in Brief : 2 Schools Tie for 1st Place in Super Quiz
Markham Intermediate School in Watts and the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies in the mid-city area tied for first place in the Los Angeles Unified School District Academic Pentathlon Super Quiz, which was held Feb. 25.
Markham won the Super Quiz, which is considered the top event of the five-event competition, the previous two years.
The pentathlon tests students’ knowledge in English, mathematics, history and science through written exams. The Super Quiz is conducted before an audience and focuses on a predetermined theme. This year’s quiz subject was the Jules Verne novel, “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.”
Sepulveda Junior High School in Sepulveda took second place in the quiz, and third place was a three-way tie between Griffith in East Los Angeles, Reed in North Hollywood and San Fernando. Overall pentathlon winners will be announced at a ceremony at school board headquarters on April 3.
