Dodgers Must Know Hershiser’s Value
The continual coverage regarding salary negotiations of ballplayers got me to thinking about perspectives.
As an example, an offer by the Dodgers of about $2.5 million per year doesn’t sound like very much in today’s market for sport stars. However, a person out of sports would have to earn an average of about $65,000 a year for 40 years, or an average of about $125,000 a year for 20 years, to equal $2.5 million.
This is not peak salary, but an average over that period of time.
When you look at what the professional stars are demanding and getting for throwing a baseball hard and straight, or passing a football accurately up to 50 yards, and compare it to other professionals in the workplace, it sure seems as though the whole system and sense of values has gone complete bonkers.
