Local News in Brief : GTE Contract With Union Extended
GTE California said Tuesday that its contract with the Communications Workers of America--which was scheduled to expire at midnight--has been extended indefinitely.
The union, which represents nearly 15,000 hourly employees, and the company have been negotiating over several issues, including health care contributions, since Jan. 30.
GTE spokesman Larry Cox said the contract extension can be cancelled within 72 hours by either side.
Union members are taking a strike vote against the phone company, which serves about 2.7 million customers in 330 communities including Long Beach and other beach cities in Los Angeles County. Results will be announced Monday.
