High School Roundup : Westminster Holds Off No. 1 Hart

Hart High was unable to rally from a five-run deficit in the seventh inning and fell to Westminster, 7-4, Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the El Segundo baseball tournament.

Trailing, 7-2, the Indians put together a two-run rally on singles by Dave Toledo, Chad Miyata and Jay Sanford, and a run-scoring pop foul by Darin Tsukashima. The Indians left the bases loaded, however.

Hart (2-1), ranked No. 1 in the Times’ Valley poll, scored two runs in the first inning when Vasquez followed Migata’s double with a home run. Sophomore Keith Halcovich (1-1) took the loss. Westminster improved to 3-0.

In other baseball games:

Canyon 9, Chatsworth 6--Kevin Backes hit a home run and Sean Nichols picked up the victory as Canyon (1-2) upset the Chancellors in a Westside tournament game at Chatsworth.

Nichols gave up three hits and four runs in five innings.

Artesia 3, Westlake 0--The Warriors were held to three singles in the quarterfinal game of the Westside tournament at Artesia High.

Westlake had runners on first and third with none out in the sixth inning but failed to score.

Mike Eby (1-1) took the loss for Westlake (2-1). The left-hander struck out four, walked one and gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Channel Islands 12, Montclair Prep 5--Jimmy Davis hit a grand slam in the first and Pat Avila added a two-run home run in the second for Channel Islands, which led, 9-1, after three innings en route to the third-round victory in the Westside tournament game at Montclair Prep.

Burroughs 2, Banning 1--Senior left-hander Brian Forth threw only 74 pitches in pitching a four-hitter for host Burroughs in the third round of the El Segundo tournament.

Tony MacCaughtry hit a two-run single in the third to knock in both of the Indians’ runs. Poly 7, La Canada 5--David Giatti picked up a save by shutting out La Canada after replacing starter Herman Miranda in the seventh inning of the third-place game of the La Canada tournament.

Oak Park 6, Cate 4--Scott Gibbon hit a bases-loaded double that scored two runs to cap a four-run third inning for host Oak Park in a nonleague opener.

SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 3, Banning 2 (10 innings)--Chrissy Peck struck out 19 and drove in the winning run in a nonleague game at Banning. With one out in the 10th and the score tied, 1-1, Peck (4-0) doubled to drive in Cathy Balint and Heidi Crocker.

Peck was three for five with two runs batted in and Crocker was two for five with an RBI and scored a run for El Camino Real (4-0), the defending City Section champion.

La Reina 20, Santa Clara 0--Junior right-hander Sherri Sisco threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 in the nonleague game at La Reina that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Sisco also had two hits, scored three runs and knocked in three as the Regents collected eight hits.

Simi Valley 4, Alemany 0--Heather Santiago and Chrissy Oliver combined for a no-hitter in the nonleague game at Simi Valley.

Christy Robbins had two singles and knocked in a run to lead the Pioneers (3-1).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard d. Glendale, 5-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-6, 15-12--Senior outside hitter Bob Conca had 21 kills and sophomore middle blocker Andres Carlo had 11 kills and eight stuff blocks to lead the Saracens in the nonleague match at Harvard.

Harvard posted its second upset in the past six days. Glendale is the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 3-A and Brentwood, which Harvard (2-0) defeated last week, is ranked second.

Granada Hills d. San Pedro, 15-12, 15-9, 8-15, 15-7--Miguel Montes had 13 kills and Sam Goldman added 12 for the Highlanders in a season-opening match.

Sylmar d. Verdugo Hills, 15-2, 15-13, 16-14--Steve O’Connell had 14 kills and Steve Sapera had 21 assists for host Sylmar in the nonleague match. Enrique Iniguez added 12 blocks for Sylmar (2-0).

Alemany d. Chaminade, 15-13, 9-15, 15-8, 5-15, 15-12--Matt Garland had 19 kills and Mike Golden added 18 as the Indians won a nonleague match at Alemany.

Chris Buckner had 28 kills for Chaminade (1-1).

Crespi d. Calabasas, 15-2, 15-3, 15-3--Ken Lynch had nine kills for Crespi in the nonleague match at home.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Chatsworth d. Royal, 4-3--Ron Charles and Chad Solter of host Chatsworth each won in straight sets in a season-opening match.
