Roundup : Tustin, Mater Dei Reach Newport-Mesa Final
Danny Baker pitched a three-hitter and Tustin High School defeated Foothill, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Newport-Mesa baseball tournament Friday at Tustin.
Baker (1-0) struck out six and walked one.
Ryan Ralph hit a bases-loaded triple in the fourth for Tustin (3-0), which plays Mater Dei today at 2:30 in the championship game.
Foothill is 2-1.
In the other semifinal game:
Mater Dei 5, Mission Viejo 4--Robbie Ickes hit a three-run homer and Jeff Ciccarella had two RBIs for the Monarchs (4-1) at Mater Dei. Troy Kopp hit a three-run homer for Mission Viejo.
In the consolation semifinals:
Capistrano Valley 3, Orange 2 (9 innings)--John Mackay doubled home Mike Lavin to give the Cougars (3-2) the victory at Capistrano Valley.
Costa Mesa 3, Tustin JV 1--Rich Schones had two hits and two RBIs at Costa Mesa (2-1).
In consolation games:
Estancia 12, Saddleback 5--Jason White had four hits and two RBIs for the Eagles (1-2) at Estancia.
Esperanza 11, El Modena 4--Jason Perez had two hits and two RBIs for the Aztecs (4-1) at Esperanza.
In the Loara tournament:
Irvine 5, Huntington Beach 2--Irvine’s Scott Vollmer had two doubles and an RBI at Irvine (3-2).
In the El Segundo tournament:
Westminster 5, Edison 3--Joe Tiano hit a two-run single in the sixth to tie the score, 3-3, and RBI singles by Brett Grebe and Tiano gave Westminster (4-0) the victory at Edison in a semifinal game.
In the Glendora tournament:
Sonora 8, Mayfair 3--Kevin Cook had two doubles and four RBIs for Sonora (2-2) in a consolation game at Glendora.
In the Serra tournament:
Orange Lutheran 6, Montebello 5--Phil Matheson hit two home runs and had four RBIs for Orange Lutheran (1-2) in a first-round game at Montebello.
In nonleague games:
Trabuco Hills 5, Pioneer 2 (8 innings)--David Lowery hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for the Mustangs (2-1) at Trabuco Hills.
In the Corona softball tournament:
El Toro 2, Corona 1--The Chargers (3-0) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh in a semifinal game at Corona.
San Clemente 8, Ramona 2--Wendy Stewart had three hits, including a home run, for San Clemente (3-1) in a semifinal game at Corona.
In nonleague softball:
Fountain Valley 3-3, Villa Park 0-0--Rae Rice pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts in the opener and Janet Miyahara pitched a four-hitter in the second for Fountain Valley (2-1-1) at Villa Park (4-3).
Santiago 9, Newport Harbor 8--Martha Huerta’s RBI single in the top of the seventh capped a two-run rally for the Cavaliers (1-3).
In nonleague boys’ swimming:
Laguna Hills 81, Dana Hills 75--Brian Fischer had Southern Section qualifying times in 100-yard freestyle (48.1 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:48.37) for the Hawks (3-0) at Dana Hills.
In Angelus League tennis:
Mater Dei 16, Bishop Montgomery 2--Dax Peterson won his three sets to lead the Monarchs (4-1, 2-0) at Mater Dei.
In Orange League tennis:
Valencia 18, Magnolia 0--Danny Yu swept his sets for the Tigers (1-2, 1-0) at Valencia.
Western 13, Anaheim 5--Ed Peregrino swept his singles matches for Western (5-1, 1-0) at Anaheim.
In nonleague tennis:
Dana Hills 10, Corona del Mar 8--Esteban Saba swept for Dana Hills (2-1) at Corona del Mar.
Mission Viejo 11, Estancia 7--Dave Allen and George Larsen swept their doubles sets for the Diablos (5-0) at Mission Viejo.
Sonora 15, Los Amigos 3--Alan Entin and Robert Shen swept in doubles for Sonora (5-1) at Sonora.
University 17, Los Alamitos 1--Willie Dann won his three sets for University (2-0) at Los Alamitos.
