Ford Motor Co. and the Chinese government are discussing several projects, including a venture that would build up to 200,000 small cars a year.

Ford, the No. 2 U.S. auto maker, is also discussing ventures with China to produce vehicles such as trucks in smaller quantities, although it is not close to concluding a deal, said Peter Slater, director of business/product strategy for Ford’s international operations.

“We have no inside track with the Chinese,” Slater said.

Chrysler Corp., with a stake in Beijing Jeep, is the only U.S. auto maker with a venture in China.
