Surgery May End Season for CLU’s Leonhardt
David Leonhardt, a sophomore second baseman at Cal Lutheran and the team’s leading hitter with a .390 average, underwent surgery on the middle finger of his right hand earlier this week and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Leonhardt broke his finger when he was hit on the hand by a line drive last week.
Jeff Brouelette will replace Leonhardt at second base.
Former Pierce College outfielder Sebastian Goodlow has signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and will report to spring training in Vero Beach, Fla., on March 29.
Goodlow, who attended Centennial High in Compton, batted .350 in 1987 and .279 last season.
Former Sylmar High standout Dana Ridenour was among 13 players sent Tuesday to the New York Yankees’ minor league complex at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for reassignment.
Ridenour, 23, had been promoted to the Yankees’ 40-man major league roster in November after spending three seasons in the team’s farm system.
Last season, Ridenour spent time with the Columbus (Ohio) Clippers of the triple-A International League and Albany-Colony (N.Y.) Yankees of the double-A Eastern League, compiling a 6-6 overall record with 14 saves.
In 1987, Ridenour was named the Yankees’ minor league pitcher of the year after posting a 5-4 record with a 1.77 earned-run average with the Ft. Lauderdale Yankees of the Class-A Florida State League.
Saugus High will stage a basketball tournament next season on Dec. 1-5, and Coach John Clark is looking for teams.
Antelope Valley, Canyon and St. Genevieve are already scheduled, and Clark is hoping to attract as many as 14 teams.
Rebecca Chiprut, 15, a student at Montclair Prep, finished second in the all-around class in a qualifying meet of the Southern California Gymnastics State Championships in the senior advanced optional division.
Chiprut also placed second in the uneven bars and floor exercise and finished sixth on the balance beam.
Angie Leonard, 11, of Sepulveda, won the vault, uneven bars and balance beam to claim the all-around title in a qualifying round in the advanced optional division for gymnasts aged 9-11.
