Releaguing May Force Fillmore to Step Up to Frontier League

Fillmore High finished third in in the Tri-Valley League in football and didn’t post a league victory in boys’ basketball.

Their reward? A possible promotion to the Frontier League.

Southern Section schools from the Northern region Friday will announce their proposal to reorganize leagues in the area for the 1990-91 and 1991-92 school years.

The region will select one of six proposals, four of which would move Fillmore to the Frontier.

“What’s our attraction?” asked Dave Wilde, Fillmore’s athletic director. “We’re dropping our girls’ soccer team and we already dropped our boys’ tennis team. We don’t have a girls’ tennis or a golf team or any swimming teams.

“Our football and basketball teams don’t generate any money. I don’t know why they want us.”

Fillmore, however, may be moved because of a shake-up in the Frontier League. Agoura, which has 1,850 students, has outgrown the competition and Santa Ynez wants to cut down on its traveling time. The Marmonte would like to become an eight-team league and Agoura is the most likely candidate. Santa Ynez wants to move to the Los Padres League.

If both teams depart, the Frontier would need another school to become a five-team league.

Fillmore, with 820 students, is the second largest school in the Tri-Valley League to Moorpark.
