Raul Chacon scored on a penalty kick with six minutes left in the first half, giving Guatemala a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica as the final round of World Cup qualifying began in the North and Central American and Caribbean region at Guatemala City.

Costa Rica, which eliminated the United States from qualifying for the 1986 World Cup, plays host to Guatemala in two weeks. The United States will play its opening match at Costa Rica April 16.
