Golf Roundup : After 11 Years on LPGA Tour, Garbacz Earns First Win

Lori Garbacz captured her first LPGA title in 11 years on the tour, fighting off Martha Nause en route to a four-stroke victory Sunday in the $300,000 Tucson Open.

Garbacz and Nause were tied from the sixth through the 10th holes before Nause bogeyed four straight holes. Nancy Lopez overtook Nause to finish second.

Garbacz birdied the final hole to finish at two-under-par 70 and 274. 14 under par, for the tournament to claim the $45,000 first-place check.

Lopez, who won the event in 1981, had a five-under 67 to finish alone in second, four back, at 10-under 278.

Nause, who was seeking her second career victory, slumped to a one-over-par 73 and finished five strokes back, tied with Jan Stephenson, Jody Rosenthal and Kristi Alvers.

Harold Henning of South Africa shot a bogey-free, seven-under-par 65 for a four-stroke victory in a $250,000 seniors golf tournament at Johannesburg.

Henning clinched the $75,000 first prize with a three-day total of 10-under-par 206.

New Zealand’s Bob Charles, who was tied with Henning after the second round, won $40,000 for second place, finishing with a 69 and a total of 210.

Also shooting final-round 69s were South Africa’s Gary Player, who finished third at 211; American Dave Hill, fourth at 212; and American Bobby Nichols, fifth at 214.
