Prep Roundup : Trujillo Hits Grand Slam to Power Esperanza, 9-1
Designated hitter Ben Trujillo, making his first start, hit a grand slam to help Esperanza High School to a 9-1 victory over Buena Park Monday in a nonleague baseball game at Esperanza.
Trujillo also had an RBI single. His grand slam broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning. Jason Bates had two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI for Esperanza (6-1-2). Greg Hauser (2-1) earned the victory.
In the Catholic school baseball tournament:
Mater Dei 15, Queen of Angels 0 (5 innings)--Greg Carl hit a grand slam and walked twice for host Mater Dei. Jason Kirrer had two hits and two RBIs and Rob Ickes had a hit and two RBIs in the game, which was called after five innings.
In nonleague softball:
Edison 3, Fullerton 2 (13 innings)--Edison scored the winning run in the bottom of the 13th on a hit batter, stolen base and two groundouts.
In nonleague golf:
Estancia 191, Newport Harbor 224--Ken Calvert shot a par 37 to lead host Estancia at Costa Mesa Country Club. Chris Lowry and Tim Piper each shot 38 for Estancia.
